Joseph Wright of Derby is well-known for paintings of scientific discovery and industry but he also painted portraits. He painted some of the leading figures in Macclesfield - this display celebrates these portraits and the stories behind them.

MBs' Trip Up the Nile

In 1873 Marianne Brocklehurst, daughter of a Macclesfield silk manufacturer, set off for Egypt with her companion Mary Booth (they were known as the MBs), her nephew, and a servant. They sailed the Nile and collected a wealth of incredible artefacts.
